Plan a Retirement You Can Actually Afford
Retirement planning calculators for US savers: target balance, withdrawal rates, FIRE timelines and inflation-adjusted projections.
Your step-by-step path
- 1
Calculate your target number
Roughly 25 times annual spending, adjusted for Social Security and for retiring early. The number is usually large enough to be discouraging at first and entirely reachable once broken into a monthly contribution.

Find your financial independence date
Your savings rate determines the timeline far more than your income does. Going from a 15% to a 30% savings rate cuts roughly a decade off a typical working career.

Stress-test the withdrawal rate
The 4% rule was derived from 30-year retirements. For a 40+ year horizon, 3.25β3.5% is the more defensible assumption, which raises the target meaningfully.

Express everything in today's dollars
At 3% inflation, costs double roughly every 24 years. A projection that reports a future balance without adjusting for inflation overstates what that balance will buy.

Plan Retirement questions
What age can I realistically retire?
It follows from your savings rate more than your income. At a 15% savings rate a full career of roughly 40 years is typical; at 30% it drops to about 28 years; above 50% it compresses under 17. The FIRE calculator computes the specific crossover for your numbers.
How much will Social Security cover?
Social Security replaces roughly 40% of pre-retirement income for a median earner, and proportionally less for higher earners because of the benefit formula's bend points. Treat it as a meaningful floor rather than a plan. Your personalized estimate is available at ssa.gov/myaccount.
Can I retire before 65 if my money is in a 401(k)?
Yes, with planning. Rule 72(t) substantially equal periodic payments, Roth conversion ladders, and the rule of 55 all provide penalty-free early access, but each has strict conditions. Most early retirees also hold a taxable bridge account to cover the years before those mechanisms become available.
